The Best Fintech Executive on Paper Isn’t Always the Best Hire

We’ve been recruiting in payments and fintech for more than 25 years, and one thing I’ve learned is that the person with the most impressive resume isn’t always the person you should hire.

We’ve seen plenty of fintech and payments candidates with impressive results for companies large and small. That’s great, but it doesn’t tell us what they actually did.

That’s what we want to know.

Did you build something? Grow revenue? Launch a new payments product? Build a team? Enter a new market? Fix a problem that had been holding the company back?

That’s much more telling than a logo on a resume.

The other thing we look at is context.

Someone who was successful at a large processor, bank, fintech, PSP, card network, acquirer, etc. may not be the right person to build a payments business at a fast-paced, growing fintech. Someone who thrived in a startup may not be the right fit for a large, established organization.

Every company has a different problem to solve.

When we’re evaluating a senior payments or fintech executive, we want to understand what they actually owned, what they accomplished, how they operate and whether their experience lines up with what the company needs next.

Sometimes the best candidate isn’t the obvious one.

In fact, some of the best hires we’ve been involved with weren’t the person who looked perfect on paper. They were the person who had dealt with a very similar challenge before and knew how to get it done.

After 25+ years in this business, that’s something we still remind clients:

Don’t hire the most impressive resume. Hire the person who can solve your problem.
